24th October 2022
On the 18th September 2022 the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain was alive with the sounds of cricket as only the West Indians can do it.
Under the auspices of the International Fellowship of Cricket loving Rotarians West Indies (IFCR-WI) chapter, two Rotarian cricket teams faced each other on the cricket pitch for a T20 game. District 7030 hosted a visiting team of Rotarians from the city of Thane India District 3142. Thane is a city just outside of Mumbai.
The visitors had arrived for a 10-day stay in Trinidad and Tobago from the 12th September to the 23rd September. While in the country they visited attractions in both islands and played a few more cricket games against other local teams.
The India team was captained by Shakeel Sheikh while the West Indies (WI) team was captained by Allim Cassim of the Rotary Club of Maracas St Joseph. Also on the WI team was a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam in Guyana.
Alongside the many Rotarians from all over Trinidad and Tobago we also had in attendance the acting High Commissioner of India based in Port of Spain, Mr Raju Sharma and his wife.
The Rotary Club of St Augustine then hosted the team a few days later at a social function which was held at the home of a Rotarian in St Augustine.
Most of the India team members commented that cricket was what drew them to Rotary; they either joined the IFCR in India and transitioned to a Rotary Club or joined a club because they would have the opportunity to play cricket as part of their Rotary experience.
Fellowships can play a vital role in attracting or keeping members interested in your Rotary club. In addition, tours like this put true meaning to the international nature of the organization to which we belong: Rotary International.
There are many other Fellowships listed on the Rotary International website which cover a wide range of interests. Please encourage your club members to seek out and participate in one of them today.
